GMAT™ Test · Version 1.0 guide

Read for relationships.

When studying a word, ask what it does in the sentence. Does it qualify a claim, support a conclusion, or signal a contrast? Read the whole example before checking its definition.

Try explaining the sentence in your own words. Pay particular attention to scope: a possibility, a probability, and a certainty are different claims.

GRE® Test · Version 1.0 guide

Learn the meaning that fits.

Read each definition together with its example. A familiar word can have an unfamiliar academic meaning. Notice the speaker’s attitude, the strength of the claim, and any contrast in the sentence.

Similar words are not always interchangeable. Check whether they fit the same context and preserve the same meaning.

A short, repeatable study session

  1. Start with Quiz to answer contextual four-choice questions using new and familiar words.
  2. Check each answer to record only that question’s word as studied.
  3. Use Browse to explore words directly, then use Review for studied words in your chosen scope.
  4. Rate your recall honestly so the next review fits what you remember.

Study a manageable set. Return consistently and review words in context rather than rushing through a larger list.
